Description of Show/Artist statements:
This is the fourth collaboration between painter Susan Lawrence Norman and sculptor Gwen Harrison Lockhart. In Duets Four! the two have again complemented each other’s works by focusing on particular gestures or moods of people, animals, and birds. Their works reveal the beauty and breath of life. Both artists have a classical approach to their subjects with a tendency toward the romantic.
Susan Lawrence Normanpaints to portray the beauty she sees in life. Her early works featured heart-warming relationships: a couple in love, a mother and child, a family at rest. More recently she has expanded her subject matter to include musicians, dancers, animals, and birds -- with the goal of capturing those moments that reflect the best of life.
Susan paints in oil and captures her impressions of life using color, the effect of light and textural brushwork like the French Impressionists. The world Susan creates through her paintings merges form and color to suggest the beauty of life itself.
"Her body of work is sublimely romantic without being overly sentimental, each piece making a statement uniquely its own, causing viewers to linger and contemplate the serene, unhurried world she presents."
-- Elan Magazine
For artist Gwen Harrison Lockhart, sculpture is about capturing the movement and gesture of the subject while incorporating the emotion of the moment. Lockhart normally sculpts in clay, plastilene or wax and works at achieving her dual goals of creating the desired likeness and expression.
“I put my own ideas and emotions, including spirit, gesture and movement, into each of my sculptures,” said Lockhart, “whether they are animals, heads or busts, or full figurative pieces.” By the time she completes a sculpture and achieves for herself “the euphoria of success”, she feels as though she actually lives inside each of her works.
Many of her sculptures, including numerous commissioned pieces, have been cast in bronze and are available in limited editions. All of Lockhart’s bronzes are cast using the lost wax process. Lockhart is also a member of The Art League at Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria.
