NOT UNRELATED original oil paintings by Susan H Sherwin and original stained glass by Stephen G Sherwin
Tuesday July 8, – Sunday August 3, 2014 Meet-the-Artists Reception Saturday July 12, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Color, light, line, and form in glass. People and animals rendered in oil. The artwork couldn’t be more unrelated, except that the artists are married to each other. Both have MFA’s in Theatre Design; Susan in costume and makeup and Stephen in scenery and properties. He is a scenic artist and painter. She has an opinion on everything. As a result of this background they are able to advise, respond, and interact to each other’s work.
SUSAN H. SHERWIN
Susan recently moved to Virginia after retiring from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point as their costume designer. Susan received her MFA in Theatre from Wayne State University (Detroit, MI). After 20 years designing, rendering, and building clothing for imaginary characters, she is now finding her voice as a fine artist in oils.
Susan paints landscape, still-life, figures and animals in a realistic style. She is working through the concepts of a “casual portrait”, in which the situation, location, and mood are integral to the portrait. She chooses subjects that have emotional appeal, often with a narrative. After years of seeing “reality” in theatre with heightened colors, dramatic lighting, and stylized settings, she used all those elements along with an unusual sense of cropping and composition in her work. You can see additional work by Susan at www.sherwinwithoutwilliams.com.

STEPHEN G SHERWIN
Stephen recently moved to Virginia, retiring after 31 years from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point as Professor of scenic designer and coordinator of the BFA theatre design and technology program. He is the author of a theatre text book, “Scene Painting Projects for Theatre.”
His original designs in stained glass explore both traditional design as well as high-concept contemporary work. After a long career as a theatre artist and a member of an artistic team, Stephen now is able to work with his own concepts and artistic visions. “I am captivated by the beauty and color of glass. I want to stretch the boundaries of flat panels to include free standing sculpture.”
