John Ploch is a resident of Alexandria, Virginia and began a long-deferred desire to do direct carving in stone in 2003. His works in soapstone and alabaster are all done by hand with hammer, chisel, and files followed by extensive fine sanding. For many years, his sculptures have been juried into the monthly Art League shows at The Torpedo Factory in Alexandria.
With his style of abstract work, Mr. Ploch strives to make the sculpture interesting from all points of view and to ensure that every line or plane on one part of the sculpture communicates with all of the lines and planes on the other sculpture surfaces. This three-dimensional approach creates interest regardless of the observer’s point of view and invites the observer to look at each piece frequently to gain new understanding.
